The reforestation and environmental recovery project, aimed at enhancing the living conditions of the community, partners with Foreste per Sempre ODV and Associazione Fides Onlus.
Project Objectives: Our initiative aims to restore 130 hectares of land within the Municipality of Sakalalina, focusing on safeguarding the ecosystem and preserving vital water resources. This project is designed to span an initial period of ten years, with the potential to extend for an additional decade to ensure sustained commitment. Additionally, we strive to elevate community awareness by providing comprehensive training on the rights and responsibilities of residents concerning environmental protection and public health. Through these initiatives, we seek to foster a community that is well-informed and actively engaged in sustainable practices, thereby improving both the environment and the well-being of its residents.
The project’s progress is seamless and impressive, with the forest gracefully shaping up, largely due to the unwavering dedication and hard work of all those involved. The involvement and continuous efforts of Fides ONG have been especially crucial and instrumental in driving this transformation forward.
September 2023 We are thrilled to announce that through our partnership with Società Benefit srl “Planta Rei”, we have an incredible opportunity to significantly expand and continue our reforestation project in Sakalalina for an additional ten years. This remarkable extension will allow us to further enhance our efforts in restoring the natural environment and promoting sustainable development in the region.
The nursery is eagerly looking forward to the arrival of the rainy season, as it marks the beginning of its upcoming production cycle. The staff is preparing in anticipation, ready to take advantage of the optimal growing conditions that the rain will bring.
From the periodical of the FIDES Onlus Association “Thanks to the rain that has finally arrived in Sakalalina, the “Padre Mario Lupano” botanical garden is reinvigorated. New trees have been planted. One of the new varieties is the breadfruit tree, which produces edible fruits that, once cooked, acquire the typical flavor of fresh bread or cooked potatoes, depending on the processing. The flour obtained from the fruits is quite caloric and for this reason it is useful for supporting the energy needs of less well-off consumers in the tropical zones. The high carbohydrate content makes it a potential staple food, which could be used in the fight against hunger and to ensure overall food security. Other varieties present are: baobab, acacia, cocoa plant, fire tree, moringa, tamarind, mango. Often young people from the village and scout groups are involved and enthusiastically meet to plant new trees in the reforestation site.”
