Building on the triumph of our previous campaign, which enabled us to transform a former grazing land into a rewilding zone, we are excited to launch a new, ambitious project: acquiring another available area highlighted on the updated map. We are convinced that purchasing land and incorporating it into an established protected Natural Reserve is the most effective strategy for fostering and preserving forested areas. Recently, the Karen Mogensen Reserve received state recognition as a Conservation Area, guaranteeing its ongoing protection.
The creators of the Karen Mogensen Nature Reserve have crafted a pioneering approach with their project, and now it’s time to put it into action. Beginning at the reserve’s core, the aim is to extend the protected ecosystem, enabling the forest to regenerate and flourish naturally.
Despite the protection provided by the Karen Mogensen Nature Reserve, many challenges still affect the wildlife and ecosystems beyond its boundaries in the Nicoya Peninsula. Annually, vast tracts of private land are cleared, often illegally, for several purposes:
Clearing for construction projects
Logging for the timber industry
Conversion to teak plantations, an invasive species
Clearing for cattle ranching
Acquiring the plots we have identified will help safeguard those sections of the forest from all of the above.
Support Foreste per Sempre ODV and the Asepaleco Association in Costa Rica by donating to expand the Karen Mogensen Reserve on the Nicoya Peninsula. Your donation will help acquire more forest land, enhancing the existing reserve of nearly one thousand hectares.
Established in 1996 with a 364-hectare acquisition, the Reserve has expanded to 960 hectares on the Nicoya Peninsula, largely due to the efforts of Foreste per Sempre ODV. This transitional tropical forest is a haven for many rare and endangered species, serving as a crucial sanctuary. It plays a vital role in protecting springs and waterways that supply five communities, including Venado Island, with water. Originally used for cattle farming and subsistence agriculture, the land has undergone a remarkable transformation. Natural seed dispersers like birds, bats, and wind have facilitated the forest’s regeneration. Over two decades later, the flourishing secondary forest stands as a natural and effective solution for capturing atmospheric carbon dioxide, helping to combat climate change. Additionally, the reserve is an integral part of the peninsula’s biological corridor.
Donate today. With every $5 contribution, you help protect 10 square meters of forest, safeguarding the future of its plants and animals. Support the life of a tree, 1,000 insects, two frogs, a bird, and a small mammal. Your donation aids in absorbing 10 kg of greenhouse gases annually, fighting climate change.
